SpongeBob Turns 10

The most famous sponge in the world is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, and Nickodeon has big plans. This Friday, Nickelodeon will air a 50-episode marathon of its hit TV show "SpongeBob SquarePants." Frequently top-ranked for total day cable network viewership, Nickelodeon owes much of its success to SpongeBob.

Ten of the 50 episodes scheduled to air during the marathon are brand new! In addition, sister network VH1 will air a SpongeBob documentary today, titled "Square Roots: The Story of SpongeBob SquarePants," and Stephen Hillenburg, the show's creator, will be interviewed among others. Hillenburg, both a marine biologist and illustrator, is responsible for creating one of the most popular kids' programs in U.S. history. Since its inception, "SpongeBob SquarePants" has been nominated for countless awards, including several Emmy nominations. The program has repeatedly won Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Award for 'Favorite Cartoon.'

Cable TV just wouldn’t be the same without this yellow and porous sponge, which President Obama has recognized to be his favorite television character.
